New Orleans Bayou Mural-SMALL

I apologize for the small size- unfortunately this is the only picture I have of this mural. If I find another I promise I will load up one with less suck. At least you can see the colors.

This was a super speedy mural painted in the yard of the Columbus Street Children's Center, located in the 7th ward of New Orleans. I sketched and painted it within, I'd say, 4 hours.

I didn't start out the day knowing I would be painting a mural- in fact, I pretty much didn't know until the pencil touched the board. I went to the Center with my Americorps*NCCC team for Global Youth Service day, met up with some City Year people (hey y'all) and some super sweet little kids and the amazing Rev Josephine Phillips, who runs the center. She went inside and made us lunch while we painted the walls.

The only request was the bird in the center- but then it all went downhill from there. There's a gator, a nutria, a fat stork and a tiny frog on that stick as well. It's like a bayou-flavored clusterf***- I almost put a crawdad in there as well. I also tried to make it ridiculously colorful and "Mardi-Gras-y" because I am a moron.

It's a little stiff and blocky and I really don't know what is up with the gator's doublejoint arm thing but it happens.
